May, 11 2008 Colby, KS.- The 2008 racing season got under way Sunday night with the third year of the BST IMCA series coming to town. IMCA racing returned to Colby as the Modifieds, Stocks, and Hobby Stocks are IMCA sanctioned this year. Ronnie Hill, Jason Rogers, Ricky Runnion and Alex West all gathered the first trophies of the year at Colby. The next races at Thomas County Speedway are scheduled for Sunday, June 1st at 7:00 pm. Come on out for some great racing action!
Modifieds
Ronnie Hill #41 of Sharon Springs captured his first win in a modified at Colby and showed how he can be a contender all year long by also winning his heat and the cash dash. Hill held off two of the best modified drivers in the nation. Wayne Brooks #X from Bald Knob, AR and David Murray Jr. #97m from Oberlin. Between the two of them they have over one thousand main event wins. Brooks had to chase Hill all night and Murray just made it to third on the last lap. John Hansen #8h held third until that last lap with Darrin DeLoach catching the leaders and grabbing the 5th position. Eddie Belec #3b and Robby Haines #9r were 6th and 7th. Brady Coen #3 finished 8th, and Nick Tubbs #737 was 9th with Grant Junghans #2 rounding out the top ten. Twenty-five Modifieds were on hand.
Stock Cars
The Stock class came down to a last lap pass at the flag stand. Jason Rogers #37 edged out Travis Sherfick #66 who had led the entire main. Josh Hudson #7 was not far behind in 3rd and Ryan Wark #8 was closing in and placed 4th. Travis Towns #3 held off Lloyd Meeske #32 who was held back by traffic in the first laps of the race for 5th and 6th position. Adam Balthazar #92 finished 7th with Dan Lauer #49, Arnold Williams #07w, and Wheat Lippelmann #44 closing out the top ten. Eric Kinderknecht #cz8 had by far the scariest crash of the night as he hit the wall on the backstretch and then rolled several times. He was not injured but you can not say the same for the car. There were 19 stocks at the start of the main.
Hobby Stocks
The hobby stock class provided many new drivers to the Colby track. The top six finishers had not raced in Colby before Sunday. Ricky Runnion #88 came out on top for the night with Todd Pankonin #16d a close 2nd. Joey Carter #88j finished in 3rd and Travis Glassman #26 fought hard for 4th. Austin Davis #22 beat Richard Boon #33 to the line for 5th and 6th. Joey Snethen #s98 and Allen Snethen #21 were the first faces familiar to Colby scoring 7th and 8th. Twelve cars started the main.
Econos
Alex West #31 had a clean sweep of the econo class by winning his heat, cash dash and the main. Chad Normandin #01 came in 2nd after getting around the #49 of Brandon Redlin. Redlin was 3rd and Dusty Knox finished 4th. Dan Blair #86 ended in the 5th position and Chad Fields #10f started at the back of the pack made it to 6th before the checkered. There were 13 econos start the main.
